Juri made her first television debut in 2002 at the age of 16 in the NHK series "Seizon". Then in 2003 Juri making her first film major appearance in "Chirosoku no Natsu" which won the "Sponichi Grand Prize New Talent Award". And in the 2004 with her performance film in "Swing Girls" Juri won the "Mainichi Film Awards". "Swing Girls" also proved to be a new breakthrough when Juri received critical acclaim and awards for "Best Newcomer" by the "Yokohama Film Festival" and the "Japanese Academy Awards".
In 2004, Juri took on a supporting role in TBS's Japanese romance drama "Orange Days" and co-starred in 2005 with "Takuya Kimura" in Fuji TV's romantic comedy "Engine" as "Misae Hoshino". In the same year Juri also appeared with "Kazuya Kamenashi" in the special television Japanese movie "Kinda'ichi Shōnen no Jikenbo" taking over the role of "Miyuki Nanase" from "Anne Suzuki".
Her popularity rose further when Ueno was cast as "Megumi Noda" in "Nodame" in the following year, a live-action television adaptation of the popular manga "Nodame Cantabile". Ueno had co-starring opposite with "Hiroshi Tamaki". this 11-episode series run was a success with an average viewership rating in Japan of 18.79% and with the season final garnering until 21.7% of the viewership share for its time slot.
Ueno was portrayed as the eccentric and disorganized but yet extremely affable and talented pianist. With this role Ueno won "Best Lead Actress" (51st) at Television Drama Academy Awards besides that her drama won "Best Drama". Her drama was also recognized at the 2nd Seoul Drama Festival as "Best Miniseries".
